English 68: Reading Lab

Course information

You should find a book for this project. It can be a book you are currently reading for another class, but your writing must be original for English 68.

If you need help finding a book, please ask a tutor for assistance. We have the book lists for the courses used in the English/ESL Department, so we can help you find a book of proper difficulty. We can also discuss books with the instructor you would like to study with next semester, so that you can start reading now for a course you will take in the future.

For credit, you should record ten journal writings about your book and also ten hours of attendance in the Writing Centers.

Journal writing instructions

Choose one sentence from your book, and copy it exactly. Write the book's title, the author's name, and the page number. Then write your ideas about the sentence. Do not summarize the story.

Here are some ideas to help you write. You do not need to answer all these questions each time.

Is the idea in the sentence right or wrong? Are the attitudes or beliefs expressed good or bad? Why? What would happen if everyone in the world thought or acted in this way?

Does it remind you of something you've done before? Did you ever know someone who thought or did such things?

Try some creative writing: change the next part of the book. Re-write the dialog. Change the ending. Write it so the hero wins if she loses in the book or change the story so that something different happens.

Feel free to ask a tutor to help you edit your writing, understand these directions, or record your work.
