THE KOREATOWN COMMUNITY 1997
by Dennis Pacheco

Koreatown is located on the street Olympic between 8th street going east and west. And on Vermont and Western, north and south. Koreatown has been going through a lot of changes because of the many different cultures that have been moving in or have being living there since. This community is populated with about 35% Koreans, 55% Latinos (Mexicans, Salvadorians, Gatemaltecos), and 10% others. You can say that it a melting pot community because all these different cultures are clashing together in one place, but still even though there is animosity stirring up the place there can be harmony as well. In the workplace environment it shows even though, many business are owned by Koreans owned in this community. Exception for some that are located on Vermont, there are not only Korean workers there but also Latinos doing mainly maintenance and delivery or the same jobs probably for less money. It shows that we as a bonding community can get along to accomplish the efforts and tasks that it takes to run a business and the community. Koreatown is a very special place for me because I been living there for about ten years. In addition, because I grew here between different cultures and races that gave the thought of appreciation of others no matter their races, color, or gender. That gave me the experience to learn not to be racist, ignorant, and to help others out when I can, because we are all humans and we deserve the same respect from each other. I was lucky to have learned such important manners and knowledge in my early years because that closes the gap of a hateful and selfish pride-misunderstanding attitude. I have also seen so many things change and happen during the beginning of the 1990-decade, like the communityís environment, the people, and their attitudes toward each other. By my own experiences I know that Koreans here in there community can either show respect or dislike towards someone that is not on their level, meaning the lifestyle (wealth, and materialistic things), beliefs, or race. Not all of the Koreans have this stereotype outlook towards Latinos and vise versa, because I know we are not perfect and we all have our pride or strong roots tied to the culture that we where born into. Koreatown has a school in its community named (Berendo Jr. High), a mainstream supermarket (Hanam), a park (Normandie Recreational Park), a Church, a bank (Korean Bank), and several commercial fast food chains business all walking distance in our community. There are still some businesses that are owned by some Latinos entrepreneurs in Koreatown like Liborio, El Jajito, Tacos Corona, and El Turco these businesses do get a lot of customers but the majority of them are Latinos. I rarely do not see any Koreans go into does types of restaurants or stores mainly because they rather eat or buy the type of items that their a custom to. Or it could be that they do not want any of those businesses to make any profit of them. It might be that they are a little prejudice about their counterpart competition. That Latinos are coming up in white America and are becoming successful than they are. Most Latinos go buy from these Korean own stores because they find them more closer and save time in traveling but in the supplies that they are buying. Most Latinos are not affair to try something new like food or things that might resemble something they used before but with a different name. . Koreans in their community go well together like East Los Angeles with Chicanos, well thatís a small example but it relates to the subject in which the people compliment their environment or the community as a whole. Koreans play a major roll here as the suitors because they not only own businesses here but also organize events that will take place like the Korean parade each year or like special fundraiser for their church. Koreans have their own way at managing their own families and children unlike the Latino population. Moreover, they still take care of business in a professional and arrogant manner. Koreans are full of pride and stubbornness with their image as been superior to others even the white Caucasian people. They seem to care little for others but when it come to their interest they will take charge and become fully humble or out raged at a certain situation so it can go the way they want it to. Many Koreans try not to show to much emotion when it come to their family or friends because of the way they take their pride as the dominant male ego. (1) Koreans are perfectionists that try their best to do what they can in any situation to make it come out as well as the next person. Because of this reason many Koreans look at the Latino population and think or know that there is that characteristic that makes them better than the Latinos. They strive to control any dilemma that might confront them in the business aspect or family matters. Koreans are very stable people because they like to maintain their business running on days that are holidays and take those holiday that mean something to their culture and will close just for their convince. They seem to celebrate only those holidays that are most important to them because of their strong ties to their culture, but they should know that is America and their traditions have to change as their environment did. (2) It is not the same as their Korean country, which they fled because of the economic and political problems. They have to at least try to adapt to some of the traditions that America has in order for their whole self-characteristic and outlook on other people to change. Not only Koreans have this problem but others do to, like not standing up when the national anthem is sang or listening to a speech given by the President. Latinos living in Koreatown should take their knowledge and apply it to their lifestyle or give their children something to think about before they go of and do something that will worsen their lives. They just will not understand that the barrier between Latinos and the Koreans can benefit or just cause a lot hate and frustration for our families and children that are growing up. I find it interesting that some Koreans have taken the time to learn the Spanish language. Most Latinos do not care about learning or just do not plan to educate themselves toward a better perception and appreciation. That will help them communicated with the Koreans in our community, so more things that could be done as a bonding whole and not be left out. Some Latinos think that we should not be able to combine our cultures together. Because, that will cause our people to loose their roots and pride where we came from. In addition, will embarrass, or insult our culture, but that there is stereotyping; that is pass down to their children for another generation or so. Latino adults here in Koreatown have to work and be able to maintain their own in order to keep living and ignore things that will bring shame to themselves or their families. There are many struggles that Latinos have to face each day as adults. One thing, is to keep their family in order and make sure the children go to school and not to jail because of the gang activity and the drug sellers and users as peer pressure that attracts them on the streets in this community. These things, have been done by the Latino population that has been run by gangs in the neighborhood for years. However, its something like that, is going to take the effort of the Latino people to eliminate the problems in the streets. Its going to take the effort of every Latino family to stop this in order to better the community and ourselves were we live in. Those types of dilemmas have given the Latino population the reputation of bad people and not wanted anywhere not even jail. Latino teenager, have their own struggles and controversy as young people growing up in such a diverse community. The reputation that is already labeled on them since they started going to school and notice they were different not only because their dark skin but for the faults of the past generation before them. That is something that we must strive to change to better our reputation and life. These young people get their mentality from many places because they do not get the support they need from their parents or parent, which most of these young people come from single parent homes, hard to manage without the male role model in the family. So they look else where for that encouragement and help. Many of them turn to gangs or drugs not realizing that it is not going to solve the problem but add more difficulty to their complex lives. Sure, they found the attention and respect from others, once in a gang, but how long will that last, not long, from what I have seen. Their so called friends or homies will not solve their problem but make more of them. Either by going jail after they committed a crime or in the cemetery dead after getting shot by a rival gang by the same race, we are just killing each other off. All these young people have their own way of looking at this community. As been owned and controlled by the Koreans but still try to take some of that control by causing chaos and violence throughout the Korean community as way to getting themselves noticed.(3) They take on their own style in dressing, talking, and acting as the rebel that they are, because they try not to fit in or look like their Korean neighbors or anyone else in any way. They have their own pride to keep up as gangsters, taggers, or alternative rebels, which James Dean and Morsie as their icon heroes or role models. Which keeps young Latinos in that dark hole that was dugged up by the mistakes done in the earlier years by the same type of people. Latinos, in Koreatown have to find a way to stop the events going on within our race so the cycle will not continue. It seems that we can not get along with each other even, though there is major concerns to do so. Because of certain misunderstandings or its the ignorance that keeps us as a race from coming together and making the difference to improve our situation in this community. (4) Latinos face many other obstacles that seem to be taking their toll slowly. Like the proposition 187 and the welfare reform help being cut. That will sure have a severe impact on the small and large Latino families that are only making enough at work to pay their rent. In addition, Latinos need that help from the government like the food stamps and medi-care for the seniors, disabled, and single parents, because of the high cost for the food and medical help these days. Latinos are seen as ěwet backsî and ěillegal aliensî that come here to take up space and money that could be put to use in other place. But the real reason for Latinos coming to America is to escape the wars, the economic problems, some are fugitives of contra fare, and other just come here because the could make more money and have a better lifestyle.(5) Latinos are known as good hard workers that will work under any condition and get paid below the minimum wage for long hours. Believe me, all Koreans know about this just mentioned, because they pick up ětravajadoresî on the corner of Olympic and Mariposa located in Koreatown. Where all the ětravajadoresî get together early in the morning and wait until someone comes look for the cheap labor being offered. Many of the people that come looking for them are either white or Koreans that want to save a lot of money by not hiring contractors that will charge them about ten time the amount that their paying the ětravajadoresî. Most of the ětravajadoresî are Mexicans, Salvadorians, Gatemaltecos and range from the their late forties and early twenties. Usually the youngest ones are used for minor work and the older men get the more responsible and technical work because of their experience and know-how of the different machines being used. Because of this group of men who are eager to go and work and make the best of their situation by making money and supporting their families. Life here does not seem to get any easier for them. But more complicated, but to some extent someone always benefits from this great and courageous effort and thatís the legal citizens or the rightful citizens of this nation full of prosperity, hope, and freedom. The rightful citizen thinks these aspects mentioned in the United States Constitution can not be met if there are to many illegal aliens running around taking their jobs (jobs nobody else wants). Taking their legal help from the government (maybe so, but take a look at the U.S. debt its in the trillions and thatís not the cause of immigrants. The government rather spend or waste tax dollars on other projects instead on their own people). And taking all their medical benefits offered by Medi-Care (look at Canada, they have a public health plan for everyone and thatís part of their legal rights as being citizens). But, the thing is that there are to many organizations and people that are just greedy to provide for others, when they can make a fast profit for themselves. These are the types of things that people that voted on proposition 187 do not acknowledge because of the simple fact that people here have a phobia of the Latinos and their accomplishments. (7) An event that occurs once every year in the community is the Korean Parade that starts on the corner of Olympic and Vermont and finishes at Western and Olympic. An o stretched out mile that many floats have to prepare for. The parade usually is done on the last day of summer or the day before the last day, which is good because the weather is usually great and more people will come out and see it. There are many floats, politicians riding their cars, bands, men on horses, and clowns that run up down doing funny things. The floats represent the people or the organization that help prepare and raise enough money in order for them to out in the parade. The floats where decorated with some type of plastic colored paper and foam shaped designs. The people on the floats where usually traditionally dressed, with cloth from their country, like the Koreans had their bright colored material and nice shaped hat that went well with the garments. There was also Latino floats that where basically the same except for the people on the float and the way they were dressed. These floats were followed by a musical group that would play music from their culture and dance while going down the street. This was a very nice experience for everyone that came to watch or be part of this event. A particular float was to represent the radio station 92.3 the Beat because they found that this was a great event that a lot of people where going to. A perfect opportunity to use their slogan "increase the peace and erase the color line". (8) They advertise the parade on the air and had posted flier so that more people can get interested and come see these great event that brought so many people together from different types of culture but also for their participation. The crime in Koreatown comes from both the Latinos and the uprising Korean gangsters that hang around the Donut Shop at the corner of Vermont and Olympic, which is a very popular spot for all young people. Crime has actually dropped in the past few years from the help of the police force C.R.A.S.H., which aimed their attention on the gangs, all around Los Angeles. A few years back about 1993 there was a lot of crime happening in the area of Koreatown because of the gangs that have their neighborhood there and around the community. The Salvadorian gang, which calls themselves Mara Salvatrucha (MS) which means a group of Salvadorians that, everyone should watch out for. This gang has been around for as long as I could remember. They have many enemies including some Asian gangs for no apparent reason, it might be just something like territory. Well this gang has caused so much chaos to many people and the community. Because the have a high number of members and most of them are young kids that come from single parent households, which make it even more difficult for young children to ignore peer-pressure. There has being many casualties, where many people young, old, and new-borns, alike have lost their lives because of gang shootings and their violence. I lost several friends do to the violence and ignorance of these ruthless gangsters (MS). A few years back, my two friend Gabby and George where on their way to picking David and me up from my home so we can go to a near by school where we play basketball each weekend for a few hours. When Gabby dropped us off at the school, he said that he wanted to go to the store and buy something to drink. So David and I stayed while Gabby and George left to the store. Than several minutes later, there were loud gunshots and a noise from a car taking off just down the street. David and me ran as fast as we could to where a group of people where gathered looking on to what had happened to my friends. From what I saw Gabby and George had made it to the store because there potato chips and sodas where in the car, but they didn't make it back to the playground. The thing is that my two friends that was shot where not gangsters or hanged around with gangsters, so there was reason for them getting shot. The only reason found was that they (Gabby and George) were coming out of a rival gang's neighborhood (Playboys) that hates MS. I guess it was mistake and identity, when everyone looks the same although they are not. (9) From what the neighbors had told me what happened. They said that Gabby and George where both going to make a right turn on the corner of 11th and Fedora. When a big black car made left to block them off and two gang members from MS got out of the car. Shot the driver who was Gabby on the neck with a 357 magnum and than went around the car to the passenger and shot Gorge in the chest about four times which killed him instantly. Gabby was still alive. The ambulance came and took him to the hospital. Where he lay in the critical care room with the life support machine attached to his heart, but it was not his heart, but his brain, which was not functioning, so my friend Gabby was dead already. (10) Because he turned pail blue and cold, there was no circulation of blood in his body. The doctors and his family kept him there for a least three days until they could not do anything else for him. They declared him dead. That situation, there has change my views totally around from someone that took each day as it came, now I thank God for what he has provided me with. Koreans gangsters are bad themselves. After all, they are already Americanized which makes them more superiors to others. Often they do what they want to do in their own community because it seems that they get away with almost anything out of fear that they will retaliate on their own people. They have fancy cars that were given to them by their parents, which send them money from Korea to study here in the United States. (11) They also dress the same from the Latino gangsters because that is the traditional cloth wear for all gang members in Los Angeles. Most of the Korean gangs assembled in the late 1980's. At that time it was very popular to be a gangster or hang around them because the use of drugs, guns, and girls. The gangs also attracted females to their gatherings and that is another reason it had become the thing, which young people had to do. Gangs got the reputation of a group of people who do not care about anything but their neighborhood. And do not care weather they improve or not in life. The gangs also mislead their members that they will be there for them through good and bad. (12) They give the new members protection and in return, they have to do what they tell them. It could be from robbing someone or a store for money to get drugs and guns or doing drive-bys at rival gangs or even someone that looked at them the wrong way. That's all the advantages that the gangs provide for those that are truly loyal and down for their hood, which is nothing but a few letters that ruins lives no matter the color of skin and gender. Most gangsters that I have spoken to, have told me the truth about their so called homies or hood. They have gone to jail and done time in prison and not one of their friends (homies) went to visit them. In addition, they did not except their collect calls or even send them a few dollars so they can buy something that they needed. Nothing real means anything to them any more that has to do with their hood. They were very hard core gangsters in the hood who got the respect from their homies but not from their families. The gang life-style has been the cause of many deaths and funerals in the city of Los Angeles it seem to have been the second most dangerous cause which young people are dying from beside overdose or car accidents. (13) Even, though the police are there for protection, whom are they really protecting? This question has been asked for years sense the 1991 riot in Los Angeles and the out come of the accused police men that brutally beat down Rodny King after trying to stop him in a traffic violation. That was unexpected from someone to catch that on camera and turn it in to an authorized personal. The out come of the policemen was ridiculous in court and it really cause people to think about who is on their side when things get out of control with the police and their excessive reaction. The police are there just to protect the rich and arrest the poor because of their economic consequences. Probably a voice in politics will help, but there is none because there are only those politicians that look out for the rich and the famous. The police brutally has been happening for years but not all the event that take place are not reported or even if it where to make into the courts the case won't last long because of the lack of evidence. That is the way it goes until the police attacks some one thatís rich or has some say so in the political table. (14) Many time, police brutally has taken place in the community of Koreatown and most of the people are Latino gang members or someone that has been mistaken for someone else that was wearing the same thing as them. A few months ago there was a Latino man, Juan Lopez that had been, arrested for murder in the first degree. When the police had arrested him they used excessive force because he was said to have had resisted arrest and was going hysterical. Juan Lopez was brutally beat down and then released because they found that the descriptions did not match with the information that he came out with. The only difference was that the Juan Lopez weighed less and was a little shorter than the man that had committed the crime. Juan Lopez came out of prison and went to the press. And told them that the police had put him in jail for something that he did not commit and was mistreated when been arrested by the police and in jail by the prisoners. He opened the eyes of many people that had had the same thing happen to them or it can happen as well to those that live a normal life. Where they are falsely accused or even harassed by the police while walking down the street just because they look like uncivilized people. Juan Lopez had lost his job because of the arrest and did not receive any help from the courts or even the public. Maybe, because he was and illegal alien with no papers, even if he did have all the expected documents he still would have not received anything because that how this society has treated the Latino people. (15) Koreans get help from the police and their support because of the wealth they provide to the community. There are some Korean police; that specifically patrols the Korean community and harass the homeless and the suspicious suspects that are walking the street. They sometime use their power to an excessive level because of the image they want the Koreans to look at them as their hero that will do what it takes them to feel safe. (16) Korean police have been going around the community and cause so much controversy to the Latino population. They favor the Koreans residents and are doing many things with no proper cause. Religion in the community of Koreatown is very different from other communities because of the different cultures that clash in one place. Most of the Koreans are Christians that serve God, as the disciples of the world and the other percentage of Koreans are Buddhist, or Catholic. Latinos in this community are Catholic and thatís a high percentage of the Latino population of them. The others are Christians, Jahova witness or nonbelievers because of negligence to their values and morals. And thatís what makes this community different from other organized communities. The Christians Koreans are very devoted to their religion like other people are, but the difference is that they get together early in the mornings to praise the day that God has given them and preaching in their language to other Koreans that are around the area. Koreans seem to only preach to those that can contribute to the cause of their church. They are very picky when approaching a person. Even to worldly (someone that does not belong to a religion) Koreans because they want the ones that can make that sacrifice and give money to their church and help those Koreans that need their help. Koreans do not approach Latinos because of their language barrier or is that they feel that they are not worthy enough to be received with open arms in an environment that is not like the one they are accustom too. But, that would be a controversy that the Bible itself says not to judge someone for there race or creed and that why we are all brothers through his creation. Christian Koreans have service every Wednesday and Sunday at the church located at the corner of Berendo and Olympic. It is a very nice structure that was remodeled just recently and new parts were added for the children and a parking lot. The church looks like a big house that makes their followers feel that they are coming to their holy home. The services last up to two hours at a certain time because they do not want to over crowd the streets or the church. Christian Koreans have to become baptize in to the house of God so that they can be forgiven for their sins. The process is different of baptizing in all religions because of the dissimilarity in beliefs and terms of the person. This is something that has to happen in order for the person to become part and belong to the remarkable Christian religion. This religion has the highest percentage, which is about half the Korean population and in the community. (17) Koreans also follow the Buddhist religion, which simply is about conscious and the thought of knowledge where they are the center of their own universe. This religion is worshiped in the Mid-Eastern countries and some Asian countries. (18) Koreans here in Koreatown have a place for those whom follow the Buddhist religion at the corner of, New Hampshire and San Marino. They have bought property on both sides of the street. Their gathering shrine looks like a Chinese style house with a few signs indicating that it is a Buddhist Temple. They have made their residence there for at least fifteen years. There are some white Anglos who also are part of the Buddhist religion. They live at the homes on the same block that the Buddhist owned as well. The Buddhist usually gather, chant, and talk among themselves and not with any outsiders who do not belong to their religion. Because of the difference in beliefs and to maintain their focus on their general purpose which is becoming one whole divine person. They maintain their property cleaned and well taken care of, by the same people that congregate there. The religion provides help to those that are interested to follow Buddhist, by housing them and teaching them about their religion and how they should live their lives. (19) They also have set up special programs to help children like for example; there are martial arts, painting and studying groups that help students with their homework and ways to learn of the religion. That is their way of giving back to the community in which they live in. Buddhism comes from the older generations in Korea. They have brought the many thoughts of holding their beliefs on one Doctrine and their version of the Bible with some ties to the Christian belief. When Christ was young, it said that he had past though India and some parts of China and learned of the Buddhist religion. (20). Their percentage is about one-fourth in the Korean population and in the community. Many older Koreans are well in to their religion because of their faith and trust in God. (21) These elderly people have only God to look up to because they are already in their last years of living. Thatís why they care of nothing else and do what they please always young at heart like a child. They go to church every day and pray constantly to the Bible (Christians, Catholics) or the church, which they go to. The Korean youth are loosing interest in the religion and their culture. Why, well because of the many distractions that they face each day in this country of frame and fortune. Which corrupts anyone that is not use to so much glamour and attention that seem to get more intense while the years go by. The young are not being discipline enough by their parents or their elder family, which they for -got that they need to bring the roots back to their children before a whole generation of Koreans is lost. They find that the American lifestyle is more fun, attractive, dangerous, and appealing to them. (22) Then their parents' way of living because of the many differences the youth is separating themselves from their passed roots and their culture and found a new way of living, talking, and expressing their feelings. Latinos in the Koreatown community are basically Catholic. The devoted ones go to church at lease three times in the week and those that seem to not pay to much attention to it go only Sundays. They go Sunday so that their sins will wash always by putting the holy water over their foreheads and receiving the daily beard, which is very symbolic to those that believe in the cause for Jesus death. (23) The more mature of those people have been going to the church for years and believe not only in the Bible but also in the Saints and the Rosary. They pray constantly for things that are happening either bad or good because every thing is possible through God and his mercy. The Christian population of Latinos is growing rapidly because of the many that believe that Jesus will come and save those that are from that religion (Christianity) and follow close instructions to the Holy Bible. The one of the biggest Christian church there is for the Latino population is the "Center of Christ" or "El Centro De Dois" which is located at Pico and Serano. The Disciple from the church go out after church and preach the word to people on the street with a microphone and speaker so everyone can here them. They are very humble people and believe very strongly in Jesus and their church. They read the Bible constantly and pray like the Catholics, but it is completely different in many ways. Like for example when a Christian commits a sin they go and tell everyone so that they feel that he/she done it in front of god himself and get more conviction. The women that belong to the Christian religion go out in the mornings and pass out little flyers with some scriptures from the Bible and invite anyone that wants to change their life and be saved by God when the times comes. The population of the Christian in Koreatown is 15 percent and growing. The Johova Witness followers are very friendly people. They believe in God and that everyone that does not follow the ten comments will perish and die in hell. And their there to warn people that the day is near when Jesus will come so they should repent and get baptized in the name of the father. Many people intimidated by the words that these people say but its true. Every Sunday, the Jahova witnesses get together in-groups of four or five and walk down the neighborhood. They knock on residents' homes, talk to them about the Bible, and sell them a little booklet for what ever they want to give. The population of the Johovas Witness is about 10 percent. The other percentage, are the nonbelievers and that do not care for knowing about the Bible and God. These, group of people are made up of, the youth of Latinos and the gangsters and drug dealers/addicts. They are the ones that corrupt the new generation of youngsters by providing them with pressure and intimidation. Which actually has an effect on the person that will lead them to fights, drug use and maybe murder. Because of the bad vibes that bring stereotype mentality. They think they can not become anything else or do anything that will make them happy. This is the problem has being corrupting the Korean community and the Latinos population looking bad for years and its time for a change. Religion is very important in a community that has its struggles and troubles with two groups of minorities trying to get a piece of that pie and opportunity. Sooner or later they come to see that we as a community will have to work together to resolve the problems that we have as small obstacles in the way. There will come a day when our children will play together in harmony with no racial tension to separate what they have in common a soul and one creator whom we call God. Koreatown has many interesting people in it. But what makes this community very different is that there has being changes that have brought the people to think that this community will be one of the many communities that will strive to get ahead. Yes, it does have its problems and tensions sometimes, but we as residents there; have seen through that to make this community a better and safer place to live in. This project has being a great experience because it has made me more aware of things that have caused positive changes and brought a community together. Through the effort of believing that we must contribute to the community that we can show and represent the culture we come from. There are many things, that need more attention besides the things talked about. Like children centers and drug rehabilitation centers and counselors for domestic violence. Nevertheless, the future looks bright for this community on the rise. Bibliography Hong Yi-Sup. Korean's Identity. Korea: Yousei University Press, 1973. Pp.20-48 Kim and Patterson.
